Navigating the Next Steps in your Procurement and Supply Chain Journey: Empowering Women for Success

In the fast-evolving world of procurement and supply chain management, women are increasingly making their mark as influential leaders and trailblazers. The journey to leadership, however, can be both exciting and challenging.

Navigating the path to success requires strategic planning, determination, and the willingness to step out of our comfort zone. In this blog, we’ll explore how women in the procurement and supply chain profession can position themselves for success, step up to leadership roles, and embrace calculated risks in their professional journey.

  1. Never lose sight of your own style.

Effective leadership isn’t about conforming to stereotypes; it’s about embracing your authentic self. Early in my career, I tried to behave in a certain way that I thought would help me get ahead. It wasn’t until I recognised, developed, and amplified my own strengths, that I realised that was my unique identifier, and I rocketed in the right direction with authenticity and personal satisfaction.

“Character strengths are the backbone of flourishing. Using and building on your strengths gives you more positive emotion, more engagement, better relationships, more meaning and more accomplishment.” – Martin Seligman

Recognise and leverage these strengths to build your leadership identity. Your leadership style should be an extension of your personality, allowing you to lead with confidence and authenticity – and remember, no one can ‘do you’ better than yourself!

  • Invest in yourself

The professional world is constantly evolving, so staying updated is crucial. Throughout my career, I’ve done many things to invest in my own growth, from volunteering to completing formal leadership training, attending workshops and conferences, and listening to podcast whenever I can. Investing in your own growth through continuous learning and staying informed about our profession expands your skill set and knowledge base. In doing so, you’ll become an asset to your workplace and can even position yourself for leadership roles.

  • Cultivate a strong network

Building a supportive network is pivotal in any professional journey. I’m fortunate that I love to connect and build relationships with people, but I recognise it’s not easy for everyone. However, the benefit of building your networks is so important. Our networks offer a way to share experiences and insights, they can also provide guidance and even open doors to opportunities. Seek ways to unlock your networks and don’t forget to use platforms like LinkedIn to solidify the connections you make!

  • Be purpose-led

Throughout my personal and professional life, my commitment to social justice has consistently driven me. I’ve strived to align this principle in everything I do. It’s essential for me to have genuine belief in my endeavours, as this enables me to deliver them with authenticity, passion, and energy.

Developing your personal purpose is a journey of self-discovery and introspection. It involves reflecting on your values, passions, and what truly matters to you in life. By defining your personal purpose, you give your actions and decisions a sense of direction and meaning. It becomes a guiding force that empowers you to make choices aligned with your authentic self, leading to a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life.

  • Seek out challenging opportunities

Success often lies outside of our comfort zone. Be willing to take on challenges that push your boundaries. I engaged a coach to help me recognise my strengths and opportunities, this was a crucial turning point in my career that led me to challenge myself in a career in procurement and supply! So, volunteer for projects or roles that require you to stretch your skills and think innovatively – these can be inside or outside your organisation. These experiences not only foster personal growth but can also become a showcase of your potential.

  • Advocate for yourself

Your achievements deserve recognition, and sometimes, you need to be your own advocate. I know, it feels like bragging, but get comfortable with highlighting your contributions and your strengths. Sharing your successes not only showcases your capabilities but also demonstrates your commitment to your professional journey.

  • Embrace risk and ambiguity

Stepping into leadership often involves making tough decisions and taking calculated risks. One of the best pieces of advice I received from a mentor was to embrace ambiguity. Nothing is black and white, so instead of shying away from risks, evaluate them strategically. Understand the potential outcomes, weigh the pros and cons, and trust your gut instinct. And if a decision doesn’t demand immediate attention, sleep on it! It’s amazing how time can bring greater clarity.

  • Fill your cup!

Balancing your career with personal responsibilities is a challenge we all face. Strive for a work-life balance, where you prioritise both your career and personal well-being – that’s mind, body, and soul. I’ve learnt that for me to excel in my workplace, with passion, energy, and enthusiasm, I need to set clear boundaries and have time to myself. So, block out time in your diary to think, read, reflect, exercise, whatever you need to fill your cup. Remember, you’re no good to anyone if you don’t care for yourself.

  • Lead by example

As you progress in your career, remember that you’re not just pursuing success for yourself. You’re also paving the way for future generations of women leaders. “Be what you can see” by leading by example to help others break down barriers and shatter glass ceilings. Don’t forget to support women to have a go, do that presentation, apply for that role, ask for that pay rise – we all just need a little bit of encouragement.

10. Foster inclusivity and diversity

Strive to create an environment where all voices are heard and valued, regardless of gender, background, or identity. Embrace diverse perspectives and encourage collaboration among team members with varying viewpoints. By championing inclusivity, you not only enhance the workplace culture but also pave the way for a more equitable and innovative future. In a profession where we are all crying out to find great talent, the next candidate may just be under your nose, or at the very least at the desk down the hall.

Women’s leadership journeys are unique and multifaceted. By embracing your individual strengths, investing in growth, finding your purpose, seeking challenges, and embracing ambiguity, you can position yourself for success and satisfaction.  Leadership is a continuous evolution, and each step you take contributes to your growth as a professional, as a leader, and as a person. So, step up, believe in yourself, and lead with purpose on your remarkable journey.
